WayCool vs PK Ripper - What's Wrong??

----I stated on the site and after watching this bout that I thought it was a pretty good bout, but in the opinion of my message board panel - and you may join by e-mailing me - what could they have done to make the match better?? I will give my opinion in a few days.

I work at a wrestling school, so I've seen a lot of wrestling, good and bad. This wasn't the worst I've ever seen, but it was far from good. There were several blown spots, all the punches and kicks (which looked very weak) didn't help. It was simply two guys in the ring doing whatever moves they knew how to do, without any idea of how to use them to build a match to a climax. After several big moves, both guys failed to go for a cover. If the guys in the match aren't trying to win, why should the audience care enough to root for them? There was no psychology that I saw at all. I'm not sure what the guys finishers were, but nothing they did built up to them. There wasn't even simple "work a body part" psychology. And then a contrived ref bump for the "dusty" finish. Come on. I didn't see anything special about this match at all. You can see dozens just like it at any indy show in the area.

I had a hard time telling but I believe this was supposed to be a "Baby/Baby" match however the psychology was non existant. The announcer says these two are good friends and within 3 seconds of that.. PK is throwing punches. In a baby/baby match, your turning point is "Who will throw that first punch?". So what they should have done if they wanted PK to throw the fist punch was have Way Cool out wrestle Ripper at every turn.. meanwhile frustrating Ripper to no end until Ripper finally gives in and throws that first punch. Now you've told a story. If you have two of your top babyfaces then this will split the crowd... which you only do for a good reason, as they did haveing a "baby/baby" title match. The worst thing is to have a "baby/baby" match with no reason. So you either have a title match, tournament, number 1 contender.. that kind of thing. There exucution isn't bad but I felt somethings needed to be more crisp. Harry Richards also made a good point, there are only two moves: One were you're tying to win & One were you're trying not to lose.. if they don't fit into one of those catagories, then why do them? I think PK need some color. The face mask gimmick is unique but a black one with no color defeats the purpose but in the plus side he seems very agile and I think if he worked with some the better talent in the area, we would see a good match. WayCool needs the same thing color. If your name is WayCool, you, need to look cool not like an early 80s british jr.heavyweight.

Not a bad match for an indy, it basically represents what most indy wrestling has become. I agree with what's been said so far as the biggest issue with the match was it LACKED PSYCHOLOGY! These guys are supposed to be friends and they tore into each other at the start like it was a heated grudge match, granted I understand the title is on the line etc. but still it should have been worked in the way that the Dr. of Psychology described (or was it {PREscribed) anyway.

There were some good looking spots in the match but they could have took a third as many bumps and made it all mean 10 times as much if they slowed down and used some psychology. I know a lot of todays "workers" think that psychology is just a word thrown around by "old school" guys who "don't wanna take the bumps" but the fact of the matter is, those bumps whether you take 2 or 200 in a match only mean as much as you make them mean and the story your telling and that's the thing there was a story that could have been told here with the baby vs. baby title match aspect but it wasn't, it was just another bunch of moves strung together no different than a 1000 other indy matches.

As for the commentary, I think Brian made a good point all the talk of money and "endorsement deals" for the champion just makes the whole thing sound like a parody of WWE or something. Nobody watching that show is stupid enough to think that anyone there is making any money or getting high dollar endorsement deals, on these type of shows I think you should go the opposite route, "These guys aren't out here battling for big money contracts and endorsements they are in there for the love of their chosen sport" People can accept the truth over hype and bullshit that makes it hard to take seriously.

As for the booking, I've never understood the logic behind the whole "these two didn't have a clean winner so now we put it in a tournament." Why would you drag all these other people into it, just have a rematch with the two people involved in the match.

All and all not a bad effort, just so much could be done to make it better, and hopefully that's there mindset and not the "we know all" mentality that most "indy vets" seem to have these days.

My thoughts were similar to Gene Jackson's on this match. I really think PK and WayCool could be real good workers. I would put them along with Wildside on my roster, but they would have to listen and work on their psychology. Again, Gene had a great idea in saying, "these guys may not get the big bucks.." kind of thing and that puts lots of importance to the belt. Until all three of these guys learn some kind of psychology, they are going to never leave this level.

I was asked to watch this match and make a comment or two on it.

Well, I don't really know what I can say that hasn't already been said. It is typical of indy matches and people wonder why a lot of the indy events don't draw, like this one. That match won't draw a nickle. Or what they tried, and it was a feeble try, to set up for a tournament, it made no sense. But I was asked to comment on the match, not the booking.

First, they started the match with feet and fist, from two guys that are friends???? WTF? They did nothing to show respect for each other or the title. And I agree, the punches and kicks were weak. But if you start with feet and fist where do you go from there and this match should have had no punches or kicks, especially with a wrestling finish. It just makes no sense.

Second, nothing, and I mean nothing, led to anything.

Third, some of the execution was sloppy as hell,Ok, most of it.They only went 14 1/5 minutes and they were sucking air 7 or 8 minutes in, that can account for some of the sloppy execution but that's bullshit, if you can't go 15 minutes without sucking air, get out of the ring until you can get in decent shape, or maybe thier execution is just that sloppy, if that's the case, learn how to execute the moves want to do.

This match, like so many others in the Indies, lacked any fundamentals at all. I think it's because they don't know the fundamentals. It lacked any structure, It was just a bunch of shit thrown together, as they used to say "it's scrambled eggs."

Maybe because I have a wrestling school and demand more out of my guys that I am too hard on guys like this, but I don't think so. I like to watch a good match, this wasn't one of them.

I hate to watch a match like this and trash it, but I was asked for my opinion and to post it here and I did. But I want to be fair, the things that I think are missing, like fundamentals are hard to learn when you don't have anyone to teach them to you. So here's what I will offer to any of the indy guys out there. Contact me and come to the school and I will teach you. I will do it for $20 a person in groups of 4 or more.

I know you guys are working hard, but it's all for nothing. While the two guys in the match worked hard, it meant zero. I don't think they, not just these two guys, but indy guys in general, don't know the goal, it's all about what they want to do in the ring on any given night, and that's not the goal. Matches like this don't draw money.

Tom Prichard said it best, "Do you want to be an Indy Wrestler or a Professional Wrestler?" There is a difference.
